Water Quality Sampling and Design

Course Description

The intent of the water quality monitoring and design course is to provide participants with knowledge required in order to sample and design programs for effluents and fresh water safely, properly, and with the ability to obtain the best scientifically-defensible results. This will be accomplished through the use of case studies and exercises which will reinforce the principles developed in the classroom. These will uphold current British Columbia Provincial and federal legislation and best management practices for monitoring program design.

Objective

  • Define terms used in water quality that are crucial to being able to develop a good study design
  • Define the main principles in the design of effluent sampling programs and ambient fresh water quality monitoring programs, including but not limited to types of programs.
  • Contrast and define programs where these main principles have been followed in order to get a greater appreciation of the theory of the course.
  • Apply the understanding gained through the theoretical discussion and the practical real-life examples and develop their own study designs during the course.
  • Define the main principles in monitoring effluents and ambient fresh water quality monitoring of lakes and streams, including collection of representative samples for each case,
  • Define why different meters are used in monitoring, and the need for proper calibration of each.
  • Contrast and define programs where these main principles have been followed in order to get a greater appreciation of the theory of the course.
  • Contrast and apply the theoretical discussion on the practical real-life examples.
  • Sample effluents,stream and lakes in a safe and accurate manner.

Prerequisites

None- Swift water Rescue, recommended but not mandatory.

Course fees are refundable if you withdraw a minimum of 10 days prior to the start date of the course.Note that special refund deadlines are stated for some courses, and we are unable to issue refunds after those deadlines - information will appear in the intake's details available on the NREP schedule page.
