Scholarship Opportunities

There are several scholarships available to engineering students attending Vancouver Island University for their first year of studies.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive, and will be updated as often as possible to reflect current award/scholarship offerings. If you are interested in further details regarding one (or more) of these opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact the Engineering Student Advisor.

Transfer Scholarships

APEGBC Engineering Transfer Entrance Scholarships - Several entry scholarships offered to British Columbia high school graduates entering engineering transfer programs at Universitys in BC. Valued at $1000 each. Award on the basis of academic standing, extracurricular activities, financial need, and a student statement.

Engineering Institute of Canada -- Vancouver Island Branch -- Two grants are available for students entering 2nd year Engineering. Valued at $2000 each. Applicants must have graduate from a high school on Vancouver Island and must have achieved a minimum of a 'B' grade average in their previous year of studies.

Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Program -- available for students completing the first their first two years of studies at at University and who need to transfer to a University to complete their final two years of studies. Up to 150 annual scholarships of $5000 each are available. Check their website for further eligibility requirements.

VIU Specific Scholarships/Awards

Aurora NanoDevices Inc. Entrance Award -- 1 award, $500; available to students entering the Engineering program. To benefit students who demonstrate strong academic credentials and show good character, motivation to serve and succeed and commitment to the community, evidenced through leadership in school, civic and extra-curricular activities. Applicants will be required to include an essay (up to 500 words) describing how they fulfill the criteria and a copy of their high school transcript. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by March 15. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.

Herold Engineering Entrance Award -- 1 award, $1,000; available to students entering the Engineering program at Vancouver Island University. The intent of this award is to benefit a first year student who demonstrates strong academics / leadership in school, sports or clubs / volunteer and extra-curricular activities / commitment to their community. Applicants will be required to include an essay (up to 500 words) describing how they fulfill the criteria and a copy of their high school transcript. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by March 15. Funds issued as a tuition credit for the fall term.

Herold Engineering Scholarship -- 1 award, $1,000; available for 1st year Engineering students progressing to 2nd year at Vancouver Island University. The intent of this award is to benefit a continuing student who demonstrates strong academics / leadership in school, sports or clubs / volunteer and extra-curricular activities / commitment to their community. Applicants will be required to include an essay (up to 500 words) describing how they fulfill the criteria. Selection will be based on recommendation from faculty and will take into consideration the applicant's motivation to serve and succeed, their positive attitude and good character. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds will be issued as a tuition credit for the fall term.

Mansbridge Family Scholarships -- 2 awards, $1,000 each; one to a female student and one to a male student; available to students enrolled in Engineering; based on academic achievement. No application necessary. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall term.

Newcastle Engineering Scholarship -- 1 award, $1,000; available for 1st year Engineering students progressing to 2nd year at Vancouver Island University. Selection based on academic achievement (cumulative GPA of 7.5 or higher). No application necessary. Funds will be issued as a tuition credit for the fall semester.

External Scholarships/Awards

Engineering Institute of Canada, Vancouver Island Branch -- Bursaries or Scholarships are offered annually to students who have graduated from a Vancouver Island high school and completed the first year of a degree course in Engineering. Further information and applications may be obtained by writing to The Engineering Institute of Canada, Vancouver Island Branch, Scholarship Society, 1565 Brodick Cres., Victoria, BC, V8N 1N3. Deadline: July 31.

Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of BC -- Vancouver Island Branch Award -- 1 award, $750; available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering program at VIU OR to students in Applied Science, who will be proceeding to a degree in Engineering or Geoscience at Vancouver Island University, or another institution for the upcoming fall term. Award is based on high academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30.
