VIU Woodlot

Stewardship, recreation and education

The VIU Woodlot, or Woodlot 0020, is a sustainably managed 694-hectare forest. It’s located within the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw and Snaw'naw'as First Nations on Vancouver Island. This crown land spans the lower slopes of Mount Benson.

Whether you're a student, a nature lover or a recreational enthusiast, the VIU Woodlot offers something for everyone. This forested space boasts a unique blend of:

  • educational opportunities
  • ecological conservation
  • recreational activities

It is a living classroom for students, a haven for wildlife and a serene escape for nature enthusiasts.

The Woodlot is guided by a comprehensive plan that prioritizes:

  • ecological health
  • cultural heritage
  • community engagement

Ecological stewardship

Our commitment to sustainable forest management ensures that the VIU Woodlot remains a thriving ecosystem. We maintain forest health by

  • reducing the proliferation of pests and diseases
  • managing abiotic disturbances like wind and fire
  • promoting biodiversity

The woodlot is home to various plant species, including Western redcedar (Thuja plicata) and medicinal plants, including Devil’s club (Oplopanax horridus). In addition to biodiverse plant communities, the VIU Woodlot houses wildlife species including

  • multiple species of owl
  • American black bears (Ursus americanus)
  • cougars (Puma concolor)

The many animals and plants living at the woodlot are protected and conserved through ecologically appropriate forest activities.

Recreational opportunities

The VIU Woodlot is a welcoming space for non-motorized recreational activities. You can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, bird watching and horseback riding on well-maintained trails.

The Ammonite Falls Trail and the Witchcraft Lake Trail provide scenic routes through the forest. And our collaboration with the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all in areas throughout the woodlot.

Cultural heritage

Respecting the cultural heritage of the local First Nations is a cornerstone of our management plan. We are committed to protecting any identified spiritual site, and providing opportunities for access to traditional resources. This includes traditionally used plants and Western redcedar trees, where possible.

Fire prevention and safety

Forest fire prevention is a top priority at the VIU Woodlot. We adhere to the Wildfire Act and Wildfire Regulation to prevent and suppress unplanned fires. During periods of high fire risk, public access may be restricted to protect the area.
