FISH 231 Non-salmonid Aquaculture
This course explores aspects of non salmonid fin fish culture beginning with a review of reproductive endocrinology, ploidy and sex manipulations in aquaculture. The general reproductive behaviour of fish is then examined in term of Balon's reproductive guild system and the implications for life history strategies. The curriculum then focuses on the culture of tilapia, hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, and carp followed by an overview of the exotic aquarium fish industry and trade. The final portion of the program covers water quality management in warm water aquaculture ponds. The lecture portion of the course is supplemented with hands on work in which groups of students breed and rear a species of warm water fish in the aquarium fish recirculation system.
