Earth Science Research

A number of research projects have been and are currently being carried out by Earth Science Department faculty, staff and students. The primary goal of these projects is to introduce students to:

  • The fundamental steps of scientific enquiry
  • Problem identification
  • Data collection
  • Analysis and interpretation
  • Communication

Some of these projects are done within the bounds of GEOL 490 or GEOL 491, while others have been supported with external funding. To find out more about what type of projects we have been involved in, see student research projects and faculty research projects. Potential projects for students who are interested in undertaking a directed study or research project include:

  • Karst structural mapping on Vancouver Island
  • Cordilleran icesheet postglacial landforms
  • Petrological and geochemical studies of various Wrangellia formations
