Welcome to Vancouver Island University's Faculty of Science and Technology!
Our Faculty's mission is to stimulate scholarship in sciences and to encourage scientific literacy in the wider population. We achieve these goals through teaching and learning, facilitated by close student-faculty interactions, through research and through a strong connection to our community.
We offer a number of exciting programs for you, spanning a wide range of pure and applied sciences.
In addition to the core sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics), we also offer a breadth of applied programs including Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, as well as Resource Management and Protection.
We are a teaching and learning-centered Institution, and we pride ourselves on excellent student-faculty ratios, strong student mentorship, and lots of hands-on learning experiences, both in the lab and in the field. We also have key research facilities, including the Applied Environmental Research Laboratory, the Centre for Shellfish Research, the VIU Forest, and the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. In every program, students are engaged in “real-world” experiences through a variety of projects and research.
Our alumni tell us that they get an excellent education at VIU that helps them to move into highly successful careers and further academic endeavours.
While our main focus is on our students' formal education, all this takes place in beautiful, natural surroundings, with a wide range of recreational opportunities and easy access to both Vancouver and Victoria.
