John received a BSc from the University of British Columbia and a Dip. Tech. from BCIT. He spent eight years working as an Environmental Consultant before returning to UBC for his MSc and PhD. John started at Malaspina with the Fisheries Extension Program in 1997 and began teaching in VIU's RMOT program in September 1999 as a fish and wildlife instructor. He is currently a Fisheries Professor and the degree advisor in the department. John's professional development activities involve volunteering for the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the BC Hydro Fish and Wildlife Coastal Program and the American Fisheries Society, where he recently stood as the Washington-BC Chapter President. John is also currently involved in a multi-agency project to establish and monitor a coho salmon run in the Millstone River watershed.
