Barbara Bunting Memorial Award

Barb Bunting lived and worked on Vancouver Island as a marine biologist for all of her adult life. She played an important part in the establishment of several shellfish aquaculture ventures, both on the Island and on the coast of BC. She worked closely with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Vancouver Island University, doing research and applying that knowledge to shellfish (specifically scallop and oyster) aquaculture starting in the mid-1980s. Barb continued to work in the industry to understand impacts on shellfish aquaculture due to climate change until 2018. Her strong work ethic and science-based approach helped growers resolve problems and make a living from the ocean. Although she traveled the world, Barb loved Vancouver Island and the marine environment that surrounds it. This award honours her love of place and love of science.
